so, the first image is an inkpen sketch done of the real life model. about a 20 minute skecth, just trying to mostly capture the pose and the facial features. the other stuff can be figured out without the model. the sketch is scanned into my computer, adjusted onto the page in photoshop, and then a light contrast image printed out on cardstock paper to do my penciling over.

the penciled page is then scanned into the computer and touched up just slightly in photoshop to remove any unwanted traces of my light contrast outline.

then the penciled page is printed and inked with pitt permanent ink artist pens. mostly a brushpen but a few smaller points for details in the face and hands.

the inked page is scanned into the computer and then digitally painted in photoshop.

and voila! the illustration is ready to be printed on quality paper and framed.

simple photo collage of scanned objects. used action figures, tools, computer parts, and a harley wallet chain to create sort of a frankenstein awakes type moment. pretty easy but fun nonetheless.

okay, this is a friend of mine, alexis, who is a painter. i did this initially as a quik sketch of her in her studio cartoon style. done in ink in my sketchbook. i scanned it in, then printed out a version with very light ink and cleaned up alot of stray ink marks. then i did a little pencilling and finally inked it by hand. then i scanned in the inked page and colored it in photoshop. i tried a few new things with my coloring using different textures in different selections, and adding in some non linear textures at a color burn layer and then lowered the opacity for a "painterly" look. this is my best p-shop coloring effort to date. i think there is other stuff i can do to this to really nail it but im going to leave it as is and post it for a bit.

lotsa different steps to arriving at this image. first, a sketch of a friend of mine at the park, done pretty small. scanned, scaled up, lightened, printed and inked by hand. then colored with walnut ink. scanned again then "aged" in photoshop, about a 20 step procedure.

Honing Computer Skills, First Shot.

scanned a sketchbook drawing, touched it up, lightened it to pencil color, printed, inked by hand, scanned, cleaned up, colored, placed on a background and scaled to fit, then lettered.
all in p-shop and illustrator. while it may seem basic to some of you, to me its a major step forward in honing my skills. i couldnt do any of the coloring and lettering in january, so my computer class at penn valley really paid off for me.
look for more digital work from me in the future.

Inking Kirby

I love practicing inking over the work of the greatest american comic artist of all time, good ol' Jack "king" Kirby. This is one of my better inking attempts to date, and having scanned it and tweaked it in photoshop a bit, then looking at it on my monitor, i can see parts i would like to be stronger. Im not going to touch this up or anything, but just take what ive learned to my next project.

Holy Crap! lol, stumbled across this pic on the internet of Alan Moore and Jack Kirby together. now i know that kirby was a small dude, but good god alan moore looks like a godzilla monster standing next to him!

Really cool pic in my opinion, the old guard and the avant garde sharing time at a panel.

picked this up for a buck at half price books. i really like ink drawings, especially those with tons of cross hatching, really appeals to the OCD in me. this kind of reminds me of some berni wrightson stuff ive seen but im not sure who the artist is.

Ive been bagging and boarding and catalogging my comic collection for the past couple of months (yeah, i got that many...sigh....) and i ran across this issue of superman that i picked up when it came out, some 15 or so years ago i think, just because i liked the cover. This was at a time where i never bought superman comics, and never bought a comic for its artwork, let alone just a cover. Except for this one, which was done i just realized, by Brian Bolland.

Brian Bolland is pretty good i think.
